At risk of giving away who won this game: the 1994 CFL season was the first season ever in the CFL where they really were a Cam-Am league, as opposed to just a Canadian league. Because the winner of this game would go on to play the Baltimore Stallions in the Grey Cup. And this was also a great championship game between 2/3 best teams in all of the CFL that year, playing for the Western Championship.

The great Warren Moon who was a great NFL caliber QB, playing in the CFL. Because even by 1981 after Moon led the Eskimos to their 3rd straight Grey Cup Championship, no NFL club would even give Moon a look.

It wasn’t until 1984 after the Houston Oilers had essentially fallen flat on their faces and were at the bottom of the NFL and Moon was 28 at that point, did the Oilers sign him, which finally got Warren Moon to the NFL where he would have a great career and the Oilers would become consistent winners of the late 1980s and early 90s.

CFL 1979 WEST FINAL CALGARY STAMPEDERS AT EDMONTON ESKIMOS - Google Search

Source:CBC Sports– Edmonton Eskimos QB Warren Moon. That name should sound familiar to any pro football fan.

The Battle of Alberta to determine the West championship, with the QB for the Edmonton Eskimos being future Pro Football Hall of Fame (NFL) Warren moon, with the Houston Oilers.

The NFL didn’t even bother to draft Warren Moon, because they didn’t think he was good enough to be an NFL QB or wanted him to play another position, or perhaps there were racial reasons as well. Even though he played a major Pac 10 program at the University of Washington and had an excellent career there as a throwing QB.

The CFL gave not just Canadian football fans, but American football fans the opportunity to see how great of a QB that Warren Moon would become, because CFL games were broadcasted in America even in the 1970s. And without the CFL, we probably never see Warren Moon in the NFL, at least as a QB.

“CFL 1978 WEST SEMI FINAL WINNIPEG BLUEBOMBERS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS”

From CFL Video

At first glance, those Calgary Stampeders uniforms, look like the Atlanta Falcons uniforms of the 1970s and 80s. And Georgia Bulldog uniforms of any period with the red helmets, red jerseys, and gray pants.

38-4, sorry if I give away the score to anyone who is actually interested in this game who hasn’t seen it yet, but the announcer was talking about how good the Stampeder defense was in 78, especially their front four. And comparing it to the Edmonton Eskimos front line as well. Which was a big part of all the CFL championship success that the Eskimos had in the late 1970s and early 1980s. And when you give up four points in a CFL playoff game, you either have a great defense, or you’re playing a team with a poor offense.

The Blue Bombers scored 371 points in 1978, in sixteen games. So they could obviously move the football and score. Only the Eskimos beat the Stampeders in the CFL Playoffs in 78, in the Western Final. So they have a very good team in 78.
